Carlos Castaneda was a graduate student in anthropology at U.C.L.A., gathering information on various medicinal herbs used by the Indians in Sonora, Mexico, when he met the old Yaqui Indian, don Juan Matus.
Castaneda's first book, "The Teachings of Don Juan", was the story of the first period these two men spent together as master and pupil.
"A Separate Reality", his second book, continued the account.

This the third book in the series, "Journey to Ixtlan", retells the story of Carlos' relationship with don Juan from the beginning, although from a deeper, more enlightened perspective.
The first 17 chapters cover the same time period which his first two books covered. The last three chapters pick up where his second book, "A Separate Reality", left off.
Carlos feels he has terminated his apprenticeship at the end of "Journey to Ixtlan", and declares as much in the Introduction of this book. The fact of the matter is, however, that he continues his apprenticeship several months after the point where this third book leaves off.
His fourth book, "Tales of Power", will continue the story from the point at which he again resumed his relationship with don Juan. "Tales of Power" covers the last approximately year and a half of their relationship, and terminates with don Juan leaving the Earth.
