bolero (n.)

kind of Spanish dance in 3/4 time, "intended to represent the course of love from extreme shyness to extreme passion" [Century Dictionary], 1787, from Spanish, probably from bola "ball" (and perhaps with reference to "whirling motion"), from Latin bulla "round swelling, knob" (see bull (n.2)). In reference to a type of short jacket (worn in Spain by men, by women elsewhere), it is recorded by 1864.
