"type of high shoe or clog, raised by means of a cork sole," worn c. 1600 in Spain and Italy (in England, the style was especially associated with Venice) by women as a symbol of status (but not forming part of English costume of the period), 1570s, from Spanish chopin, which is perhaps from chapa "plate of metal."
