c. 1600, from Latin erasus, past participle of eradere "scrape out, scrape off, shave; abolish, remove," from assimilated form of ex "out" (see ex-) + radere "to scrape" (possibly from an extended form of PIE root *red- "to scrape, scratch, gnaw").
