1530s, "walk about, roam freely," from Latin expatiatus/exspatiatus, past participle of expatiari/exspatiari "wander, digress, wander from the way; spread, extend," from ex "out" (see ex-) + spatiari "to walk, spread out," from spatium (see space (n.)).
