fichu (n.)

"scarf, neckerchief, small, triangular piece forming part of a woman's dress," 1803, from French fichu (18c. in this sense), apparently a noun use of the adjective fichu "carelessly thrown on," from Latin figere "to fasten, fix," from PIE root *dheigw- "to stick, fix." "[M]od. substitution for a coarser word" [Weekley].
