"pertaining to or characteristic of a religious recluse," mid-15c., monastik, from Middle French monastique "monkish, monastic" and directly from Medieval Latin monasticus, from Ecclesiastical Greek monastikos "solitary, pertaining to a monk," from Greek monazein "to live alone" (see monastery).
