The Editors are also indebted to the many others who have contributed information on particular entries in the Dictionary; also to the staff of the libraries, especially the Bodleian Library, the British Library, the Library of Congress, and the New York Public Library, who have unfailingly treated the Dictionary's requests for information and assistance with courtesy and dispatch; and to Bellcore at Morristown, NJ (particularly Dr Michael Lesk and Dr Donald Walker), which generously provided resources throughout the development of the OED's North American Reading Programme.

A number of people have been involved in other aspects of the preparation of this volume. The Editors are particularly indebted to the following, who between them shared the task of reading and commenting on ranges of proofs:

Robert Barnhart, Michael Grose, Dr Philip Hardie, Terry Hoad, Deborah Honoré, Hazel Wright.

Thanks are also due to Katherine Barber and her team of lexicographers working on the Canadian Oxford Dictionary for their assistance with entries relating to Canadian English, and also for their important contribution to our reading programmes.

In addition to those listed on p. x of the first volume of the Oxford English Dictionary (second edition) and in the first volume of the OED Additions Series, valuable specialist comment on individual entries has been provided by the following:

Dr P. Baker, Ms K. Barber, Dr D. Barrett, Mr P. Beale, Mr I. M. Beestin, Dr H. C. Bennet-Clark, Mr A. Bissett, Professor J. Black, Mr R. J. Bowater, Mr A. Carr, Dr L. D. Carrington, Professor V. The Editors are sad to record the deaths during the preparation of the volume of Dr H. M. Rosenberg and Mr W. K. V. Gale, long-standing consultants to the Dictionary, and of Dr Donald Walker, formerly of Bellcore at Morristown, NJ, who assisted greatly in the development of the North American Reading Programme.

It is with great sadness that we record the death in June 1996 of Mathew Fletcher of our editorial staff. Much of his work for the Dictionary has still to appear in print, but his contribution to this and future OED publications will stand as an enduring testament to his outstanding talents and as a reminder to those fortunate enough to have known him.
