city and episcopal see of See also:Piedmont, See also:Italy, in the See also:province of See also:Alessandria; from the See also:town of that name it is 21 M. S.S.W. by See also:rail. Pop. (1901) 13,786. Its warm See also:sulphur sprin s are still resorted to; under the name of See also:Aquae Statiellae See also:airy were famous in See also:Roman times, and See also:Paulus Diaconus and Liutprand speak of the See also:ancient See also:bath See also:establishment. In the neighbourhood of the town are remains of the See also:aqueduct which sup-plied it. The See also:place was connected by road with See also:Alba Pompeia and See also:Augusta Taurinorum. The tribe of the Statielli, to whom the See also:district belonged, had joined the See also:Romans at an See also:early See also:period, but was attacked in 173 and in See also:part transferred to the See also:north of the Po. The town possesses a See also:fine See also:Gothic See also:cathedral.
