ACROMEGALY , the name given to a disease characterized by a true See also:hypertrophy (an overgrowth involving both bony and soft parts) of the terminal parts of the See also:body, especially of the See also:face and extremities (Gr. arcpov, point, and tcEyas, large). It is more frequent in the See also:female See also:sex, between the ages of 25 and 40. Its See also:causation is generally associated with disturbances in the pituitary gland, and an See also:extract of this body has been tried in the treatment, as one of the See also:recent developments in organotherapeutics; See also:thyroid extract has also been used, but without marked success, on the apparent See also:analogy of acromegaly with See also:myxoedema.
