ALBULA PASS , now the See also:

principal route from the N. to the Upper See also:Engadine in the Swiss See also:canton of the See also:Grisons. It was already frequented in the 13th See also:century, while a See also:carriage road (highest point, 7595 ft.) was constructed across it in i865, but for a See also:long See also:time it was not as much used as the easier and more See also:direct Julier Pass (7504 ft.), until the opening of the railway in 1903, which has vastly increased its See also:practical importance. Starting from See also:Coire the See also:Rhine valley is followed to See also:Reichenau (64 m.), and then that of the Hinter Rhine to Thusis (102 m.). The See also:line then runs through the See also:grand Schyn See also:gorge (cut by the Albula torrent) to Tiefenkastell (74 m.), where it leaves the Julier road on the right I. 17-See also:ALBUMIN 513 (S.) and continues to follow the course of the Albula Rast Filisut and Bergun (121 m.) to the mouth (5879 ft.) of the See also:great See also:tunnel (34 M. in length; highest point, 5987 ft.) which has been pierced below the pass. The descent lies through the Bevers glen to Bevers (21 m.), where the Upper Engadine is reached, about 5 M. below St. See also:Moritz, which is 56 m. from Coire by this route. (W. A. B.
