ALLOXANTIN, C8H4N407 .3H2O, a product obtained by the See also:combination of alloxan and dialuric See also:acid, probably possessing the constitution NH—CO CO—NH I I I I CO C( OH)—O--CH CO NH—CO JO—NHone of the three molecules of See also:water being possibly constitutional. It forms small hard prisms which become red on exposure to See also:air containing See also:ammonia, owing to the formation of murexide (ammonium purpurate),C8H4(NH4)N506. It may also be obtained by the See also:action of sulphuretted See also:hydrogen on alloxan. The tetra-methyl derivative, amalic acid, Cs(See also:CH3)4N4O7-, has been prepared by oxidizing See also:caffeine (q.v.) with See also:chlorine water, and forms See also:colour-less crystals which are only slightly soluble in hot water. The formation of murexide is used as a test for the presence of uric acid, which on evaporation with dilute nitric acid gives alloxantin, and by the addition of ammonia to the See also:residue the See also:purple red colour of murexide becomes apparent.
