family among the See also:Ostrogoths, and that from which nearly all their See also:kings were chosen. - AMALARIC (d. 531), See also:king of the Visigoths, son of See also:Alaric II., was a See also:child when his See also:father See also:fell in See also:battle against See also:Clovis, king of the See also:Franks (5o7). He was carried for safety into See also:Spain, which See also:country and See also:Provence were thenceforth ruled by his maternal grandfather, See also:Theodoric the Ostrogoth, acting through his vicegerent, an Ostrogothic nobleman named Theudis. In 522 the See also:young Amalaric was proclaimed king, and four years later, on Theodoric's See also:death, he assumed full royal See also:power in Spain and a See also:part of See also:Languedoc, relinquishing Provence to his See also:cousin See also:Athalaric. He married See also:Clotilda, daughter of Clovis; but his disputes with her, he being an Arian and she a See also:Catholic, brought on him the See also:penalty of a Frankish invasion, in which he lost his See also:life in 531.
