AMSTERDAM (NEw AMSTERDAM) , an uninhabited and almost inaccessible See also:island in the See also:Indian Ocean, in 370 47' S., and 770 34' E., about 6o m. N. of St See also:Paul Island, and nearly midway between the Cape of See also:Good See also:Hope and See also:Tasmania. It is an See also:extinct See also:volcano, rising 2989 ft. from the See also:sea. It was discovered by See also:Anthony See also:van See also:Diemen in 1633, and annexed by See also:France in 1893. It may have been sighted by the companions of See also:Magellan returning to See also:Europe in 1522, and by a Dutch See also:vessel, the " Zeewolf, " in 1617. In 1871 the See also:British See also:frigate " Megaera " was wrecked here, and most of the 400 persons on See also:board had to remain upwards of three months on the island. The Memoires of a Frenchman, See also:Captain See also:Francois Peron (See also:Paris, 1824), who was marooned three years on the island (1792-1795), are of much See also:interest.
