ANCIEN REGIME, THE , a See also:

French phrase commonly used, even by See also:English writers, to denote the social and See also:political See also:system established in See also:France under the old See also:monarchy, which was swept away by the Revolution of 1789. The phrase is generally applicable only to France, for in no other See also:country, with perhaps the exception of See also:Japan, has there been in See also:modern times so clearly marked a See also:division between "the old See also:order" and the new.
