ANTIOCHUS , the name of thirteen See also:

kings of the Seleucid See also:dynasty in Nearer See also:Asia. The most famous are Antiochus III. the See also:Great (223—187 B.C.) who sheltered See also:Hannibal and waged See also:war with See also:Rome, and his son Antiochus IV. Epiphanes (176—164 B.c.) See also:ANTIOPE who tried to suppress Judaism by persecution (see SELEUCI!D DYNASTY). The name was subsequently See also:borne by the kings of Commagene (69 B.C.—A.D. 72), whose See also:house was affiliated to the Seleucid.
