A girl with a baby at her See also:breast and seated on an ass splendidly caparisoned was led through the See also:town to the See also:church, and there placed at the See also:gospel See also:side of the See also:altar while See also:mass was said. The ceremony degenerated into a See also:burlesque in which the ass of the flight became confused with See also:Balaam's ass. So scandalous became the popular See also:revels associated with it, that the celebration was prohibited by the church in the 15th See also:century.
