BANDANA, or BANDANNA , a word probably derived through the Portuguese from the Hindustani bdndhnu, which signified a See also:primitive method of obtaining an effect in See also:dyeing by tying up See also:cloth in different places to prevent the particular parts from receiving the dye. The name was given to richly coloured See also:silk handkerchiefs produced by this See also:process, of which See also:bright See also:colours were characteristic. Bandanas are now commonly made of See also:cotton and produced in See also:Lancashire, whence they are exported. The effect is also produced by a See also:regular process in See also:calico See also:printing, in which the See also:pattern is made by discharging the See also:colour.
