BARNAUL , a See also:

town of See also:Asiatic See also:Russia, See also:government of See also:Tomsk, See also:standing in a See also:plain bounded by offshoots of the See also:Altai Mountains, and on the Barnaulka See also:river, at its confluence with the Ob, in See also:lat. 53° 20' N. and See also:long. 83° 46' E., 220 M. S. of Tomsk. It is the See also:capital of the Altai See also:mining districts, and besides smelting furnaces possesses glassworks, a See also:bell-foundry and a See also:mint. It has also a meteorological See also:observatory, established in 1841, a mining school and a museum with a See also:rich collection of See also:mineral and zoological specimens. Barnaul was founded in 1730 by A. See also:Demidov, to whose memory a See also:monument has been erected. Pop. (1900) 29,850.
