BELL, See also:ROBERT (1800-1867) , Irish See also:man of letters, was See also:born at See also:Cork on the 16th of See also:January 1800. He was educated at Trinity See also:College, See also:Dublin, where he was one of the founders of the Dublin See also:Historical Society. In. 1828 he `settled in See also:London, where he edited a weekly See also:paper, the See also:Atlas, and until 1841 was engaged in journalism, and afterwards in See also:miscellaneous See also:literary See also:work. He died on the 12th of See also:April 1867. His most important work is his annotated edition of the See also:English Poets (24 vols., 1854-i857; new ed., 29 vols., 1866), the See also:works of each poet being prefaced by a memoir. For See also:Lard ner's,See also:Cabinet Cyclopaedia he wrote: See also:History of See also:Russia (3 vols., 1836-1838); Lives of English Poets (2 vols., 1839); a continuation, with W. See also:Wallace, of See also:Sir See also:James See also:Mackintosh's History of See also:England (vols. iv.-x., 1830-1840); and the fifth See also:volume (1840) of the Lives of the See also:British Admirals, begun by R. See also:Southey. He was a director of the Royal Literary Fund, and well known for his open-hearted generosity to See also:fellow men of letters.
