Vincent Wallace learnt as a boy to See also:play several See also:instruments, and became a leading violinist in See also:Dublin. But in 1835 he married and went off to See also:Australia, See also:sheep farming. A See also:concert in See also:Sydney revived his musical See also:passion; and having separated from his wife, he began a roving career, which had many romantic episodes, in Australia, the See also:South Seas, See also:India and South See also:America. He returned to See also:London in 1845 and made various appearances as a pianist; and in See also:November of that See also:year his See also:opera Maritana was per-formed at 'See also:Drury See also:Lane with See also:great success. This was followed by See also:Matilda of See also:Hungary (1847), Lurline (186o), The See also:Amber See also:Witch
(1861), Love's See also:Triumph (1862) and The See also:Desert See also:Flower (1863). He also published a number of compositions for the piano, &c. Vincent Wallace was a cultivated See also:man and an accomplished musician, whose Maritana still holds he See also:stage, and whose See also:work as an See also:English operatic composer, at a See also:period by no means encouraging to English See also:music, has a distinct See also:historical va'ue. Like See also:Balfe, he was born an Irishman, and his reputation as one of the few composers known beyond the British Isl at that See also:- TIME (0. Eng. Lima, cf. time is naturally coupled with Balfe's. But he was a finer artist and a more See also:original musician. In later years he became almost See also:blind; and he died in poor circumstances on the 12th of See also:October 1865, leaving a widow and two See also:children.
