DEMIDOV , the name of a famous See also:Russian See also:family, founded by Nikita Demidov (b. c. 1665), who was originally a blacksmith serf. He made his See also:fortune by his skill in the manufacture of weapons, and established an See also:iron foundry for the See also:government. See also:Peter the See also:Great, with whom he was a favourite, ennobled him in 1720. His son, Akinfly Demidov (d. c. 1740), increased his inherited See also:wealth by the See also:discovery and working of See also:gold, See also:silver and See also:copper mines. The latter's See also:nephew, See also:Paul Grigoryevich Demidov (1738-1821), was a great traveller who was a benefactor of Russian scientific See also:education; he founded an See also:annual See also:prize for Russian literature, awarded by the See also:Academy of Sciences. Paul's nephew, Nikolay Nikitich Demidov (1774-1828), raised and commanded a See also:regiment to oppose See also:Napoleon's invasion, and carried on the See also:accumulation of the family wealth from See also:mining; he contributed liberally to the erection of four See also:bridges in St See also:Petersburg, and to the See also:propagation of scientific culture in See also:Moscow. Paul's son, See also:Anatoli Demidov (1812-187o), was a well-known traveller and See also:patron of See also:art; he married Princess Mathilde; daughter of See also:Jerome See also:Bonaparte.
