BONAPARTE , the name of a See also:

family made famous by See also:Napoleon I. (q.v.), See also:emperor of the See also:French. The French See also:form Bonaparte was not commonly used, even by Napoleon, until after the See also:spring of 1796. The See also:original name was Buonaparte, which was See also:borne in the See also:early See also:middle ages by several distinct families in See also:Italy. One of these, which settled at See also:Florence before the See also:year IToo, divided in the 13th See also:century into the two branches of See also:San Miniato and See also:Sarzana. A member of this latter, See also:Francesco Buonaparte, emigrated in the middle of the 16th century to See also:Corsica, where his descendants continued to occupy themselves with the affairs of See also:law and the magistracy.
