BONAR, HORATIUS (1808-1889) , Scottish Presbyterian divine, was See also:born in See also:Edinburgh on the 19th of See also:December 18o8, and educated at the high school and university of his native See also:city. After a See also:term of See also:mission See also:work at See also:Leith, he was appointed See also:parish See also:minister of See also:Kelso in 1837, and at the Disruption of 1843 became minister of the newly formed See also:Free See also:Church, where he remained till 1866, when he went to the See also:Chalmers memorial church, Edinburgh. He had in 1853 received the D.D. degree from See also:Aberdeen University, and in 1883 he was See also:moderator of the See also:general See also:assembly of his church. He died on the 31st of See also:July 1889. Bonar was a prolific writer of religious literature, and edited several See also:journals, including the See also:Christian See also:Treasury, the Presbyterian See also:Review and the Quarterly See also:Journal of Prophecy; but his best work was done in hymnology, and he published three See also:series of See also:Hymns of Faith and See also:Hope between 1857 and 1866 (new ed., 1886). Nearly every See also:modern hymnal contains perhaps a See also:score of his hymns, including " Go, labour on," " I heard the See also:voice of Jesus say," " Here, 0 my See also:Lord, I see Thee See also:face to face," " When the weary, seeking See also:rest."
