JAMES (1841-1901) , Scottish missionary to New See also:Guinea, was See also:born at Ardrishaig in See also:Argyll. After serving in the See also:Glasgow See also:City See also:Mission he passed through See also:Cheshunt See also:College, and, being accepted by the See also:London Missionary Society, was appointed to Rarotonga in the See also:South Pacific in 1866. Here the natives gave him the well-known name "Tamate." After ten years' service, especially in training native evangelists, he was transferred to New Guinea. In addition to his enthusiastic but sane missionary See also:work, Chalmers did much to open up the See also:island, and, with his colleague W. G. See also:Lawes, gave valuable aid in the See also:British See also:annexation of the south-See also:east See also:coast of the island. On the 8th of See also:April 19o1, in See also:company with a See also:brother missionary, See also:Oliver Tomkins, he was killed by cannibals at Goaribari Island. R. L.
