He was regarded in See also:Italy as a See also:great painter in the 18th See also:century, and unquestionably did much to See also:rescue the See also:art from the intense mannerism into which it had fallen during the preceding century. His paintings, however, are not of the highest See also:order of merit, though they are generally graceful, well designed, and harmoniously coloured. His best See also:production isthought to be his See also:group of " See also:Peace and See also:War." Batoni painted an unusual number of pictures, and was also celebrated for his portraits.
