BATTEN . (1) A See also:

term (a See also:form of See also:baton ") used in See also:joinery (q.v.) for a See also:board not more than 4 to 7 in. broad or 3 in. thick, used for various purposes, such as for strengthening or holding together laths and other See also:wood-See also:work; and specially, on board See also:ship, a See also:strip of wood nailed to a See also:mast to prevent rubbing, or fixing down a See also:tarpaulin over a hatchway, in. rough See also:weather, to keep out See also:water. (2) A verb (the See also:root is found in words of several See also:Teutonic See also:languages meaning profit or improvement, and also in the See also:English "better" ' Mr C. A. See also:van Ophuijsen has published (in Bijd. tot See also:Land-, See also:Taal-en Volken-Kunde, 1886) an interesting collection of Battak See also:poetry. He describes a curious See also:leaf See also:language used by Battak lovers, in which the name of some leaf or plant is substituted for the word with which it has greatest phonetic similarity. and " See also:boot ") meaning to improve in See also:condition, especially in the See also:case of animals by feeding; so, to feed gluttonously; the word is used figuratively of prospering at the expense of another.
