BEARER , strictly " one who carries," a See also:

term used in See also:India for a See also:palanquin-bearer, and now especially for a See also:body-servant. The term is also used in connexion with military ambulances, and " bearer " companies formed See also:part of the Royal See also:Army Medical See also:Corps until amalgamated with the See also:field-hospitals to See also:form field-ambulances (1905). In banking and See also:commerce the word is applied to the holder or presenter of a See also:cheque or draft not made payable to a specific See also:person; it has also a technical use, as iri See also:printing, of anything that supports pressure in machinery, &c.
