BEARDSTOWN , a See also:

city of See also:Cass See also:county, See also:Illinois, U.S.A., in the W. See also:part of the See also:state, on the E. See also:bank of the Illinois See also:river, about 11r m. N. of St See also:Louis, See also:Missouri. It is served by the See also:Baltimore & See also:Ohio See also:South-Western, and the See also:Burlington (See also:Chicago, Burlington & See also:Quincy) See also:railways, and by steamboats plying between it and St. Louis. Pop. (1890) 4226; (1900) 4827 (444 See also:foreign-See also:born); (1910) 6107. The See also:industrial establishments of the city include See also:flour, planing and saw See also:mills, the See also:machine shops (of the St Louis See also:division) of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy railway, See also:ice factories, See also:pearl See also:button factories and a See also:shoe factory. The fishing interests are also important. Beardstown was laid out in 1827 and was incorporated as a city in 1896. It was named in See also:honour of See also:Thomas See also:Beard, who settled in the vicinity in 182o. During the See also:Black See also:Hawk See also:War (1832) it was a See also:base of supplies for the Illinois troops.
