BODHI VAMSA , a See also:

prose poem in elaborate Sanskritized See also:Pali, composed by Upatissa in the reign of Mahinda IV. of See also:Ceylon about A.D. 980. It is an See also:adaptation of a previously existing See also:work in Sinhalese on the same subject, and describes the bringing of a See also:branch of the celebrated Bo or Bodhi See also:tree (i.e. See also:Wisdom Tree, under which the See also:Buddha had attained wisdom) to Ceylon in the 3rd See also:century B.C. The Bodhi Vamsa quotes verses from the Mahavamsa, but draws a See also:great See also:deal of its material from other See also:sources; and it has occasionally preserved details of the older tradition not found in any other sources known to us. Edition in Pali for the Pali See also:Text Society by S. See also:Arthur Strong (See also:London, 1891).
