CALIVER , a firearm used in the 16th See also:century. The word is an See also:English corruption of " calibre," and arises from the " See also:arquebus of calibre," that is, of See also:standard See also:bore, which replaced the older arquebus. " Caliver," therefore, is practically synonymous with " arquebus." The heavier See also:musket, fired from a See also:rest, re-placed the caliver or arquebus towards the See also:close of the century.
