CAMPOBASSO , a See also:

city of Molise, See also:Italy, the See also:capital of the See also:province of Campobasso, 172 M. E.S.E. of See also:Rome by See also:rail, situated 2132 ft. above See also:sea-level. Pop. (1901) See also:town 11,273; See also:commune 14,491. The town itself contains no buildings of antiquarian See also:interest, but it has some See also:fine See also:modern edifices. Its See also:chief See also:industry is the manufacture of arms and See also:cutlery. Above the town are the picturesque ruins of a See also:castle of the 15th See also:century. The date of the See also:foundation of Campobasso is unknown. The town, with the territory surrounding it, was under the feudal See also:rule of See also:counts until 1739, when it passed to the Neapolitan See also:crown, in See also:consideration of a See also:payment of Io8,000 ducats.
