CAMPODEA , a small whitish wingless See also:insect with See also:long flexible antennae and a pair of elongated caudal appendages. The best-known See also:species (Campodea staphylinus) has a wide See also:distribution and is equally at See also:home in the warm valleys of See also:south See also:Europe, in the subarctic conditions of See also:mountain tops, in caves and in See also:woods and gardens in See also:England. It lives in See also:damp places under stones, fallen trees or in rotten See also:wood and leaves. Although See also:blind, it immediately crawls away on exposure to the See also:light into the nearest crevice or other sheltered spot, feeling the way with its antennae. Its See also:action is characteristically See also:serpentine, recalling that of a See also:centipede. Campodea is one of the bristle-tailed or thysanurous See also:insects of the See also:order See also:Aptera (q.v.).
