CAUSEWAY , a path on a raised See also:

dam or See also:mound across marshes or See also:low-lying ground; the word is also used of old paved highways, such as the See also:Roman military roads. " Causey " is still used dialectically in See also:England for a paved or cobbled footpath. The word is properly " causey-way," from causey, a mound or dam, which is derived, through the See also:Norman-See also:French caucie (cf. See also:modern chaussee), from the See also:late Latin via calciata, a road stamped See also:firm with the feet (calcare, to tread).
