CHARKHARI , a native See also:

state in the See also:Bundelkhand agency of Central See also:India. See also:Area, 745 sq. m.; pop. (1901) 123,594; estimated See also:revenue £33,000. It is surrounded on all sides by other states of Central India, except near Charkhari See also:town, where it meets the See also:United Provinces. It was founded by Bijai Bahadur (See also:vikramaditya), a sanad being granted him in 1804 and another in 1811. The See also:chief, whose See also:title is maharaja, is a See also:Rajput of the Bundela See also:clan, descended from Chhatar Sal, the See also:champion of the See also:independence of Bundelkhand in the 18th See also:century. In 1857 See also:Raja Ratan Singh received a hereditary salute of 11 guns, a khilat and a perpetual jagir of £1300 a See also:year in recognition of his services during the See also:Mutiny. The town of Charkhari (locally Maharajnagar) is 40 M. W. of See also:Banda; pop. (1901) 11,718.
