CHELLIAN , the name given by the See also:

French anthropologist G. de See also:Mortillet to the first See also:epoch of the See also:Quaternary See also:period when the earliest human remains are discoverable. The word is derived from the French See also:town Chelles in the See also:department of See also:Seine-et-See also:Marne. The See also:climate of the Chellian epoch was warm and humid as evidenced by the See also:wild growth of fig-trees and laurels. The animals characteristic of the epoch are the Elephas antiquus, the See also:rhinoceros, the See also:cave-See also:bear, the See also:hippopotamus and the striped hyaena. See also:Man existed and belonged to the See also:Neanderthal type. The implements characteristic of the period are flints chipped into See also:leaf-shaped forms and held in the See also:hand when used. The See also:drift-beds of St Acheul (See also:Amiens), of Menchecourt (See also:Abbeville), of Hoxne (See also:Suffolk), and the detrital See also:laterite of See also:Madras are See also:con- sidered by de Mortillet to be synchronous with the Chellian beds.
