COLUMBINE , an erect perennial herbaceous plant known botanically as Aquilegia vulgaris (natural See also:

order See also:Ranunculaceae). In Med.. Latin it was known as Columbina sc. herba, the See also:dove's plant. The slender See also:stem bears delicate, See also:long-stalked, deeply divided leaves with See also:blunt segments, and a loose panicle of handsome drooping See also:blue or See also:white See also:flowers, which are characterized by having all the five petals spurred. The plant occurs See also:wild in See also:woods and thickets in See also:England and See also:Ireland, and flowers in See also:early summer. It is well known in cultivation as a favourite See also:spring See also:flower, in many varieties, some of which have red flowers.
