COMBACONUM , or KL'MBAKONAM, a See also:

city of See also:British See also:India, in the See also:Tanjore See also:district of See also:Madras, in the See also:delta of the See also:Cauvery, on the See also:South See also:Indian railway, 194 M. from Madras. Pop. (1901) 59,623, showing an increase of to % in the See also:decade. It is a large See also:town with wide and See also:airy streets, and is adorned with pagodas, gateways and other buildings of considerable pretension. The See also:great gopuram, or See also:gate-See also:pyramid, is one of the most imposing buildings of the See also:kind, rising in twelve stories to a height of upwards of too ft., and ornamented with a profusion of figures of men and animals formed in See also:stucco. One of the See also:water-tanks inthetown is popularly reputed to be filled with water admitted from the See also:Ganges every twelve years by a subterranean passage 1200 M. See also:long; and it consequently forms a centre of attraction for large See also:numbers of devotees. The city is historically interesting as the See also:capital of the Chola See also:race, one of the See also:oldest See also:Hindu dynasties of which any traces remain, and from which the whole See also:coast of Coromandel, or more properly Cholamandal, derives its name. It contains a See also:government See also:college. See also:Brass and other See also:metal wares, See also:silk and See also:cotton See also:cloth and See also:sugar are among the manufactures.
