DHOW , the name given to a type of See also:vessel used throughout the Arabian See also:Sea. The See also:language to which the word belongs is unknown. According to the New See also:English See also:Dictionary the See also:place of origin may be the See also:Persian Gulf, assuming that the word is identical with the tava mentioned by See also:Athanasius See also:Nikitin (See also:India in the 15th See also:Century, See also:Hakluyt Society, 1858). Though the word is used generally of any See also:craft along the See also:East See also:African See also:coast, it is usually applied to the vessel of about 150 to 200 tons See also:burden with a See also:stem rising with a See also:long slope from the See also:water; dhows generally have one See also:mast with a See also:lateen See also:sail, the yard being of enormous length. Much of the See also:coasting See also:trade of the Red Sea and Persian Gulf is carried on by these vessels. They were the See also:regular vessels employed in the slave trade from the east coast of See also:Africa.
