EXEDRA , or ExHEDRA (from Gr. i , out, and ihpa, a seat), an architectural See also:term originally applied to a seat or See also:recess out of doors, intended for conversation. Such recesses were generally semicircular, as in the important example built by Herodes See also:Atticus at See also:Olympia. In the See also:great See also:Roman thermae (See also:baths) they were of large See also:size, and like apses were covered with a hemispherical vault. An example of these exists at See also:Pompeii in the See also:Street of the Tombs. From See also:Vitruvius we learn that they were often covered over, and they are described by him (v.
