He volunteered into the 3rd See also:battalion of the See also:Meuse in 1791, became a See also:lieutenant in 1797, and in 1798 was aide-de-See also:camp to See also:General Eble, and in the following See also:year to General Broussier. In his first See also:campaign in See also:Italy he greatly distinguished himself; and in See also:April 1799 he was rewarded for his services by the grade of See also:captain of dragoons. In the same year he took See also:part with See also:honour in the See also:conquest of See also:Naples and was again promoted, and in 18oi he became aide-de-camp to General See also:Murat. He accompanied Murat in the See also:Austrian, Prussian and See also:Polish See also:campaigns of 18o5, 18o6 and 1807. At the passage of the See also:Danube, and in the See also:action of Wertingen, he specially distinguished himself; he was made See also:colonel for the valour which he displayed at See also:Austerlitz, and general of See also:brigade for his conduct at See also:Eylau in 1807. In 18o8 he accompanied Murat to See also:Spain, but was there made prisoner and conveyed to See also:England. On regaining his See also:liberty in 1811 he went to Naples, where See also:- KING
