FOSSANO , a See also:town and episcopal see of See also:Piedmont, See also:Italy, in the See also:province of See also:Cuneo, 15 M. N.E. of it by See also:rail, 118o ft. above See also:sea-level. Pop. (1901) 7696 (town), 18,195 (See also:commune). It has an imposing See also:castle with four towers, begun by Filippo d'Acaia in 1314. The See also:cathedral was reconstructed at the end of the 18th See also:century. The See also:place began to acquire some importance in the 13th century. It appears as a commune in 1237, but in 1251 had to yield to See also:Asti. It finally surrendered in 1314 to Fillippo d'Acaia, whose successor handed it over to the See also:house of See also:Savoy. It lies on the See also:main See also:line from See also:Turin to Cuneo, and has a See also:branch line to See also:Mondovi.
