The See also:element was discovered in 188o in the See also:mineral samarskite by C. See also:Marignac (Comptes rendus, ,88o, 9o, p. 899; See also:Ann. chim. phys., 188o [s] 20, p. 535). G. Urbain (Comptes rendus, 1905, 140, p. 583) separates the See also:metal by crystallizing the See also:double nitrate of See also:nickel and gadolinium. The salts show absorption bands in the ultra-See also:violet. The See also:oxide Gd203 is colourless (Lecoq de Boisbaudran).
