GOTO ISLANDS [GoTo RETTO, GoTT0I, a See also:

group of islands belonging to See also:Japan, lying See also:west of Kiushiu, in 330 N., 129° E. The See also:southern of the two See also:principal islands, Fukae-shima, See also:measures 17 M. by 132; the See also:northern, Nakaori-shima, measures 23 M. by 72. These islands See also:lie almost in the See also:direct route of steamers plying between See also:Nagasaki and See also:Shanghai, and are distant some 5o M. from Nagasaki. Some See also:dome-shaped hills command the old See also:castle-See also:town of Fukae. The islands are highly cultivated; See also:deer and other See also:game abound, and See also:trout are plentiful in the See also:mountain streams. A See also:majority of the inhabitants are Christians.
