GUINES , a See also:

town in the interior of See also:Havana See also:province, See also:Cuba, about 30 m. S.E. of Havana. Pop. (1907) 8053. It is situated on a See also:plain, in the midst of a See also:rich See also:plantation See also:district, chiefly devoted to the cultivation of See also:tobacco. The first railway in Cuba was built from Havana to Guines between 1835 and 1838. One of the very few See also:good highways of the See also:island also connects Guines with the See also:capital. The See also:pueblo of Guines, which was built on a See also:great private See also:estate of the same name, See also:dates back to about 1735. The See also:church dates from r85o. Guines became a " See also:villa " in 1814, and was destroyed by See also:fire in 1817.
