HERSTAL, or HERISTAL , a See also:town of See also:Belgium, less than 2 M. N. of See also:Liege and practically one of its suburbs. The name is supposed to be derived from Heerstelle, i.e. " Permanent See also:Camp." The second See also:Pippin was See also:born here, and this See also:mayor of the See also:palace acquired the See also:control of the See also:kingdom of the See also:Franks. His See also:grand-son, Pippin the See also:Short, died at Herstal in A.D. 768, and it disputes with See also:Aix la Chapelle the See also:honour of being the birthplace of See also:Charlemagne. It is now a very active centre of See also:iron and See also:steel manufactures. The Belgian See also:national small arms factory and See also:cannon foundry are fixed here. Pop. (1904) 20,114.
