HIPPODAMUS , of See also:

Miletus, a See also:Greek architect of the 5th See also:century B.C. It was he who introduced See also:order and regularity into the planning of cities, in See also:place of the previous intricacy and confusion. For See also:Pericles he planned the arrangement of the See also:harbour-See also:town See also:Peiraeus at See also:Athens. When the Athenians founded See also:Thurii in See also:Italy he accompanied the See also:colony as architect, and afterwards, in 408 B.C., he superintended the See also:building of the new See also:city of See also:Rhodes. His schemes consisted of See also:series of broad, straight streets, cutting one another at right angles.
