Hiroshima is world famous for being the target of the dropping of "little boy," the first atomic bomb ever to be used (August 6th, 1945). There is a large Peace Park in the center of the city dedicated to promoting peace and there is a world heritage site memorial to the bombing called the "a-bomb dome" -preserved as it looked after the bombing. Hiroshima is very famous for the island of Miyajima which is also a designated world heritage site and ranked as one of the top 3 sights in Japan. It boasts more visitors every year than Disneyland (LA). Located just outside the city, the island welcomes you with a huge red torii gate in the water and the floating Itsukushima shrine behind it, there are also wild deer roaming the island. A fantastic view of the Seto Inland Sea and the surrounding islands can be had from the top of the mountain on Miyajima island. In the spring, Hiroshima turns pink with the blossoming Sakura cherry trees and in the autumn the brightly colored Koyo changing of the leaves paint the landscape anew. The city is unlike any other in Japan with its wide boulevards and many rivers that crisscross through the city center providing pleasant cycling routes for commuters to use and for everyone to enjoy. Also unlike any other major city in Japan, the city center is full of sights, shops, restaurants and bars that are easily accessible in a day on foot. The population of Hiroshima prefecture is just under 3,000,000 (est.2006), of that number, 1,600,000 people live in the city limits.
