HIROSHIMA , a See also:city and seaport of See also:Japan, See also:capital of the See also:government of its name in central Nippon. Pop. (1903) 113,545. It is very beautifully situated on a small See also:plain surrounded by hills, the See also:bay being studded with islands. In its See also:general aspect it resembles See also:Osaka, from which it is 190 m. W. by See also:rail, and next to that See also:place and See also:Hiogo it is the most important commercial centre on the Inland See also:Sea. The government has an See also:area of about 3000 sq. m., with a See also:population of about 1,500,000. Hiroshima is famous all over Japan owing to its association with the neighbouring islet of Itaku-Shima, " See also:Island of See also:Light," which is dedicated to the goddess Bentin and regarded as one of the three wonders of Japan. The See also:chief See also:temple See also:dates from the See also:year 587, and the island, which is inhabited largely by priests and their attendants, is annually visited by thousands of pilgrims. But the hallowed See also:soil is never tilled, so that all provisions have to be brought from the surrounding districts. There is a large Peace Park in the center of the city dedicated to promoting peace and there is a world heritage site memorial to the bombing called the "a-bomb dome" -preserved as it looked after the bombing. Hiroshima is very famous for the island of Miyajima which is also a designated world heritage site and ranked as one of the top 3 sights in Japan. It boasts more visitors every year than Disneyland (LA). Located just outside the city, the island welcomes you with a huge red torii gate in the water and the floating Itsukushima shrine behind it, there are also wild deer roaming the island. A fantastic view of the Seto Inland Sea and the surrounding islands can be had from the top of the mountain on Miyajima island. In the spring, Hiroshima turns pink with the blossoming Sakura cherry trees and in the autumn the brightly colored Koyo changing of the leaves paint the landscape anew. The city is unlike any other in Japan with its wide boulevards and many rivers that crisscross through the city center providing pleasant cycling routes for commuters to use and for everyone to enjoy. Also unlike any other major city in Japan, the city center is full of sights, shops, restaurants and bars that are easily accessible in a day on foot. The population of Hiroshima prefecture is just under 3,000,000 (est.2006), of that number, 1,600,000 people live in the city limits.
