English name, until the See also:time of the See also:Reformation, for the See also:Eucharist.- The word in O. Eng. was /nisei. Its proper meaning is " See also:sacrifice," and thus the word hunsl appears in See also:Ulfilas' See also:Gothic version of Matt. ix. 13, " I will have See also:mercy and not sacrifice." The ultimate. origin is doubtful. The New English See also:Dictionary connects it with a See also:Teutonic See also:stem meaning " See also:holy "; from which is derived the Lithuanian szwentas, and Lettish noels. See also:Skeat refers it to a See also:root meaning " to kill," which may connect it with Gr. xaivete.
