ICHTHYOSIS, or XERODERMA , a See also:general thickening of the whole skin and marked See also:accumulation of the epidermic elements, with See also:atrophy of the sebaceous glands, giving rise to a hard, dry, scaly See also:condition, whence the names, from Ixebs, See also:fish, and epos, dry, 3442a, skin. This disease generally first appears in See also:infancy, and is probably congenital. It differs in intensity and in See also:distribution, and is generally little amenable to any but palliative remedies, such as the See also:regular application of oily substances. Ichthyosis lingualis (" smokers' See also:tongue "), a variety See also:common in heavy smokers, occurs in opaque See also:white patches on the tongue, gums and roof of the mouth. See also:Cancer occasionally starts from the patches. The See also:affection is obstinate, but may disappear spontaneously.
